As you are aware 2013 marks the 125th year of the fi rst publication of The Sacred Heart Messenger. Truly a wonderful milestone in our history; a history of devotion, dedication, and loyalty to the little red book that has played such an important part in Irish family life. Only last month a woman told me that it has been coming into her family home for the past eighty-fi ve years. This year we presented gold pins to a number of Promoters who have promoted the Messenger for sixty years.
Why has the Messenger lasted so long? There are a number of reasons but to me there are two main reasons. The Messenger is and always has been centred on the loving Heart of Jesus Christ. He is the source of our inspiration and he is the thread that flows through every article, meditation, story, and poem or letter that you read. People share their life experience of Jesus’ love working in them and for them. The Messenger gives so much to its readers that they are renewed in their faith in God and their belief that He is at work in their lives.
The second reason is that since its very inception The Sacred Heart Messenger has depended on promoters, ordinary men and women who promote it in their parishes and who deliver it faithfully each month. Without the promoters, the Messenger would not have survived to this day.
As a fi nale to our 125 year celebrations, we are organising a Music Concert in aid of the Jesuit Missions and the Sacred Heart Fund. This concert is first of all a celebration. It is a concert of glorious sacred music performed by the Paradisum Choir from Newbridge with musicians and guest soloists under the musical direction of Owen C Lynch.
For the past two years Owen Lynch and Paradisum have sung at the Promoters’ Mass in Saint Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin. All who attended were delighted and could not stop praising the quality of the singing. In 2012, I asked Owen to write a new hymn to the Sacred Heart, especially for the Mass in Gardiner Street and it was fi rst performed at that Promoters’ Mass. It was truly exquisite. The blend of voices and the harmony made it an exceptionally beautiful composition.
After the Mass this year I approached Owen and asked if he would be interested in performing a concert for our Promoters. I explained that we were celebrating 125 years of the Messenger and that I wanted something very special for our promoters and that I would love for all our promoters to have the opportunity to hear this wonderful Choir sing. From the first moment Owen was very positive and was delighted to agree to put a concert together just for us. So, for the past number of weeks we have looked at how we might bring this concert about. We secured the venue, which is Saint Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, thanks to the kind co-operation of Donal Neary SJ. The choir, musicians, and guest soloists are booked and John Guiney SJ at the Jesuit Missions Office is delighted to join us in the preparation and staging of this concert.
Over the past year or two we have featured the work of the Jesuit Missions in The Sacred Heart Messenger, and I know that many of you gave generously for the work that they do in Africa and Asia. The concert will be held on 3 November, 2013 at Saint Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin 1 at 3pm. This is a Sunday afternoon and because it is early in the day – starting at 3pm – I hope that as many of you as possible will attend. The tickets cost €10 and are available from the Messenger office (see details overleaf). This is a new venture for us at Messenger and I am confident that you will give us your full support.
I am also delighted to confirm that Marian Pilgrimages are sponsoring a pair of tickets for a pilgrimage to Lourdes in 2014. (This includes return flights plus airport transfers, accommodation with full board and the services of the Marian Pilgrimages guide).
All those present on the evening will be entered into a free draw to win this magnifi cent prize. So, not only will you have fabulous sacred music to listen to, you will also be in the draw for the trip for two to Lourdes!
